What do a maglev train and a San Francisco cable car have in common? More than you would initially think. Conventional motorized transport, be it a ship, motorcycle, automobile, train, or aeroplane, all have one thing in common. All those vehicles lug around their own engine. Why not leave the engine behind, and just move the coach and useful cargo? And that's exactly what a cable car does. The engine stays put on top of the hill. No energy is wasted in moving it about. The same goes for the maglev, where the engine is essentially the magnetized track. So when I was attending Sony's Game Tech Conference 2008 in San Francisco, I wanted to take a closer look at the Cable Car. I did not see the cables, and was puzzled. But I think the cables are below ground, and not above, where I expected them to be. Unfortunately, I did not get to ride the car.While we are on the subject of city transport: those left wing radicals running the Amsterdam city council just banished my car from the city limits. They did this just because it is older than 1992, and supposedly I pollute the city with it. The bastards! My car uses the cleaner-burning propane fuel, but they do not seem to care about that. Foolishness like that makes me glad I am in Canada now, where common sense is not shunned.

Umm....are we talking about the same country? But then again, you do not work with the general public on a daily basis.
I am glad that you had a nice trip. We can always take a road trip back to san Francisco and go on the trolley cars :)
How do cable cars work?
How many LPG powered pre-1992 cars are there anyway? Probably not a lot.
I think they should make an exception for LPG, hybrids etc. However, with exceptions comes extra trouble. That's why the free market shuns them. Linux has a market share of, what, 1%? That's why Slant Six is not ported their games to Linux. City councils are not much better.

Ja dat had je kunnen weten, het is gewoon de zwitserse ski-kabelbaan op zijn kop. Je bent in je beschouwing nog vergeten te stellen dat bij het helling af rijden van de kabelcar juist energie wordt opgewekt. Dus als smorgens vroeg iedereen in SF downhill naar het werk gaat gaan de tegemoet komende (lege) karretjes gratis omhoog???

Wat hebben een Magneettrein en een kabelwagen in San Francisco gemeenschappelijk? Meer dan u aanvankelijk zou denken. Het conventionele gemotoriseerde vervoer, zij het een schip, motorfiets, auto, trein, of vliegtuig, allen hebben één ding gemeenschappelijk. Al die voertuigen sjouwen rond met hun eigen motor. Waarom de motor niet achtergelaten, uitsluitend het koetswerk met de nuttige lading laten bewegen? En dat is precies wat een kabelwagen doet. De aandrijving blijft bovenop de heuvel gezet. Geen energie wordt verspild met het verplaatsen van een motor. Het zelfde gaat voor de magneettrein (maglev), waar de motor hoofdzakelijk het gemagnetiseerde spoor is. Dus toen ik de Conferentie 2008 van Technologie van het Spel van Sony in San Francisco bijwoonde, wilde ik een kijkje bij de Kabelwagen nemen. Ik zag niet de kabels, en was in verwarring gebracht. Maar ik denk dat de kabels, er niet boven de grond waar ik hen verwachtte maar onder de grond zijn. Jammer genoeg, kreeg ik niet de kans om de CableCar te berijden.
Terwijl wij het over stadsvervoer spreken: die linkse radicalen die de gemeenteraad van Amsterdam leiden hebben mijn auto naar buiten de stadsgrenzen verbannen. Zij deden dit enkel omdat die auto ouder is dan 1992, en vermoedelijk verontreinig ik de stad hierdoor. De bastaarden! Mijn auto gebruikt de schonere propaanbrandstof, maar zij schijnen daar niet om te geven. Stompzinnigheid als dit maakt me blij dat ik nu in Canada woon, waar het gezond verstand niet wordt gemeden.

Well don't be worried about your car in Amsterdam. Since it is still not yet official decided that cars will be banned. Although they are starting already with tearing down the RedLight so you never really know.
Where is the cable ? You mean the one which used to hook-up your PC to the Internet Blog?
You better start a thorough search in your apartment starting at the IEEE wall plug....
We will be out for a five (5) day GPS-hike on the PieterPad heading towards our finish at the Pietersberg near Maastricht.
